A DIFFERENT SET OF PEOPLE WITH A DIFFERENT MINDSET

Caleb Mwendwa Ngui is a young man from Kenya who came to America when he was 15 years old looking for opportunities he could not find in his home country.

In 2021, he was working for a company that packaged meal kits. It wasn’t the most pleasant job for him. The work was good, but the atmosphere was traumatic.

“It wasn’t a good fit for me,” Caleb admitted. “Personally speaking, the colleagues I was working with were harassing me, mistreating me, making fun of me, always making jokes about my size (and build).

Caleb put up with the harassment and tried to concentrate on his work, but he had sent out applications and his resume in the meantime to find other opportunities.

“I was contacted by Jessica Brown,” said Caleb. “It was my break time (at work), and Jessica sent me texts (about the LegalShield opportunity), and I thought ‘Wow this is interesting, an opportunity to do something different, work from home, have the experience of working with new people, (and) building something great (that will) help other people build something great.’

“I called her on Friday, and we started (training) on Monday.”

Many times, when someone joins the company as an associate, they continue to work at their first job, sometimes part-time, until their LegalShield business begins to blossom. Sometimes that can be several weeks; for others, it’s been a matter of days. A lot depends on the amount of effort you put into the development of your career.

Caleb left his regular job right away. “I stopped working at my job because the harassment there was not healthy.”

Caleb said it has been nice working with a different group of people with a different mindset – not bullies like at his other job, but helpful, kinder people who are ready and willing to help whenever you need it.

Caleb said his biggest inspiration in the company has been Chris Shepherd, his Executive Director.

“He’s been there every step of the way,” said Caleb of Chris, “even during the challenging times. I am making a lot of progress.”

The challenging time Caleb speaks of is what happened in the Fall of last year (2021), only a month into his new opportunity, he had to return to Kenya for his mother’s funeral. He was gone for a month and could not communicate with anyone in the USA on a regular basis. He learned of other new associates who were taking off with their sales, recruits, and promotions while he was unable to even watch the training videos or the online meetings.

Once he returned, however, he was able to pick up right where he left off. He still had his standing as an associate and the same mentors who were there to help him get his business going again.

“Everyone was supportive. Jessica (Brown) was hands-on, and her words gave me strength. ‘We’ll always have your back’ she told me.”

Once Caleb became a member of LegalShield/IDShield, he learned about many of the benefits offered by the company. But, he said, he never realized what that meant until he got on the websites and learned about all the benefits offered to both Associates and Members.

“It’s more than I thought,” said Caleb. “Discounts for cars (and other merchandise and services), business information, and so much more. As an Associate it’s great. I can’t complain. So many great people, so much positivity, working to help others change their lives.

“On top of that,” he continued, “it’s all the support. LegalShield is the first company I’ve worked with that all the people are supportive. All the people want you to succeed. No backtalk, no politicking.

Caleb is a quiet-speaking, thoughtful person who seems shy at times and admits he is no salesperson. But he has been working harder to find people willing to listen to the LegalShield story.

“The very first approach, if they are interested, is introducing them to the company website and the orientation videos so they can make a decision for themselves. I’m not too much on convincing (people), but I believe the way everything is structured with the company websites, anybody could go there and look at it. One person (I talked to) looked at the website and said, ‘Wow, this is great. It’s definitely a 4.5.’”

Caleb shows the videos to potential members and associates whenever he can.

“A person can learn a lot from the websites. You don’t have to do a lot of talking yourself. Just show them the websites.” All the information a potential member or associate would need is there.

When asked what helps him stick with the company and continue working on his career, Caleb spoke of the inspiring words of our colleagues and their dedication to each of us.

“Listening to our bosses and associates about how far they have come in the business, they are such an inspiration. Chris especially has been a big influence. When the 50th anniversary (of the company) was coming up, he was receiving an award, and he stated the most important thing was about the anniversary and how important it was for us to have more people there.”

Caleb said the principal advice he can give to people interested in the business (at LegalShield) is, “Just get started, and there are so many benefits when you follow the system that is in place. A well-soiled tree bears its fruit.

It’s been an awesome experience. I want to say thank you for this opportunity – Chris, Jessica, the “big bosses” for letting work and helping us along the way, for being supportive. I’m really excited.

Many of you visited the new post from Saturday, 7 May, about the young lady I work with who has made amazing advances in her position with LegalShield. I will be posting at least three to four of these articles a week.

Normally on this blog, I post stories and human interest articles. That's why I started this blog - to connect with family, friends, and others who enjoy reading about the triumphs of others over adversity.

In many ways, these stories about LegalShield associates and members are just that. They tell the story of someone moving forward in life despite the problems and issues that many of us face every day. They are a source of encouragement for my followers. Therefore, they have become a part of this blog.

I realize as well that many of the people reading those articles will be looking specifically for them, and they may be hard to find in the list of posts. For that reason, I have created another site those folks can go to when they are looking for those particular posts. That site is on sites.google.com.  It is called "Cheryl Blackburn LegalShield Associate Corespondent. The URLis https://sites.google.com/view/legalshieldcorrespondent/home .

I hope this makes it easier for everyone. Those who want to read my more personal, close-to-the-heart type of blog posts can find them here as always. Those who are looking particularly for the interview posts for LegalShield associates and members can read them here or follow the link to the new site.

A Golden Opportunity by Cheryl Blackburn, 7 May 2022

Jessica Brown is a manager with her own team of associates for LegalShield, a company that offers prepaid legal plans for individuals, families, and small businesses.

Jessica has a team of eleven associates who offer these plans to people they know or are recommended to them by other members. She works hard to encourage those on her team and help them in whatever way she can. She is on her way to becoming Senior Manager, with a goal of reaching Executive Director within the next two to three months.

She started on this career path in January of this year.

Before January, Jessica had never heard of LegalShield. That is because, unlike most other companies, LegalShield does not advertise its programs. They don’t have to. The popularity of the products they offer has spread praise by word of mouth since the company’s inception more than fifty years ago. Back then, it was known as Prepaid Legal; the name has changed since, but the ideal has not.

It is that ideal that drew Jessica in when she was introduced to the company.

“I wholeheartedly love the service, “she said recently. “I love what it offers us, I love…that we get perks all the time, whether you are an associate or a member. That’s a great feature that pays for itself.”

Jessica was introduced to the program by Chris Shepard, her Executive Director who at the time was a Senior Manager himself. He sponsored her in the business and has been there for her through her continued progress so far.

“He’s been great,” Jessica said. “He was working (toward) his Senior Management (position) when I started, and now he’s an Executive Director. It has been a pleasure to watch him grow while I am growing. Basically, I’m on the same path he was timeline-wise, so I’m progressing in the same way he was.”

Chris continues to guide Jessica along that path, she said, as he does with all his associates, and she is grateful for his help. “I’m getting there!” she declared.

Another feature of the program, both for associates and program members, is the instant connection with an attorney when one is needed.

“It’s great to know that if something comes up, I have that lawyer; I don’t have to be scared and wonder what’s going to happen to me.”

“I haven’t used my member services yet,” she said, but she agreed that it gives her more peace of mind to know that the service is there when she needs it without it costing hundreds of dollars out of pocket.

As a member with access to the services LegalShield offers and having talked to members who have been in the program for several years, Jessica said they all agree having the legal service literally in the palm of their hands has been one of the greatest services LegalShield offers.

“Let’s say you are driving, and you get pulled over. You know you didn’t do anything wrong. You can have your lawyer on the phone before the (police officer) reaches your door. That is great service.”

What drives Jessica to continue recruiting associates for her team beyond the financial aspects? “In this day and age, with Corona and all, no one wants to go back to work and chance bringing something home that will affect your family.”

The time and freedom you gain with being an associate, and spending more time with your children – recitals, ball games, family time – are great perks in themselves. There is no time schedule except what you set for yourself.

“You are on your own schedule, you’re on your own time, so if you want to drop everything and go to (events), you can go…It’s really great.

“This is something I really stress - I really make a point about. If you don’t want to stress anymore because you don’t have time to go to appointments or your child’s events, this is what you want. This (becoming an associate) is what you want to do.”

Jessica loves the freedom to be where she wants to be, particularly spending time with her children. “That time is especially golden to me,” she said, smiling. It also gives her time to spend with her extended family, which so many of us rarely have time for anymore.

Another aspect of being an associate for LegalShield is the community – the wonderful group of people she works with. “This is not like other similar programs where you get started and, once you are recruited, you are left on your own wondering ‘What do I do? How do I do this?’ It’s not that way here. Everyone wants you to succeed and they are there to help.”

Her advice to someone thinking about joining legal shield as an associate: “Typically, someone hearing about the program says, ‘Oh, no, I couldn’t do that. I wouldn’t know what to do.’

“But you do know what to do,” says Jessica. “You’ve been doing things all your life that have given you experience. Having a different background doesn’t mean you can’t do what we’re doing.”

In fact, there are many people from a variety of backgrounds that have been extremely successful at LegalShield, some within just a few weeks. There are chefs, pastors, teachers, nurses, lawyers, and parents who have never worked outside the home. Current associates may be carpenters, engineers, construction workers…people from all backgrounds, many of whom are still working in those areas but are succeeding in this arena devoting only a few hours a week to the program.

“When people say they can’t do this, I tell them it’s just the opposite. You can do what we’re doing. Having a different background doesn’t stop you from doing what we’re doing. You’re able to (succeed in the program) because we make it easy to do it. We have the best top-of-the-line training for everybody to make it easy for you to be able to do this. You don’t have to do this alone. You’ll have the support you need. And even if you don’t want to leave the job you have now, you can do this on the side (to supplement) your income so you can continue to do (the job) you love.”

Jessica says that “if you have the work ethic and the drive, this is where you can slow down, relax, and still make a difference; you can succeed.”

Jessica compares a person’s growth potential in the LegalShield company to one of her favorite fables about the bamboo plant. The fable compares life to the time and effort it takes to grow such a plant. Once the bamboo seed is planted, it takes five years of watering and nurturing the seed before any growth is detected. Then suddenly, the plant sprouts and within a few weeks, it is standing over eighty feet tall.

Of course, it doesn’t take nearly that long to progress at LegalShield. Jessica has come from knowing nothing about the company to becoming the manager of her own team in four short months. The idea is that, if it’s something you love, like your business at LegalShield, “then just care for it and it’s going to grow.”

“The parable of the Chinese Bamboo Tree teaches us lessons about patience, faith, perseverance, growth and development, and most importantly… human potential!” (“The Story of The Chinese Bamboo Tree - Women's Network ...”; https://www.womensnetwork.com.au/the-story-of-the-chinese-bamboo-tree/ )

“Your career (in this business) is like the bamboo tree. Just care for it," Jessica stressed, "and before you know it you are going to have this amazing, blooming business that took little to no effort to do.”

She is concentrating on building her team as the associate members concentrate on the sales end of the business. She works daily, helping her team members succeed. As they learn and put in the effort, everyone benefits. “I want them to succeed and grow, not just me.”

Jessica is well on her way to reaching her goals, thanks to her perseverance and the guidance she has received from the company, her sponsor, and the community willing to help her along the way.
